Have you thought about how you will remember your Mother this year?

Mothers’ Union knows that sometimes mums need a hug, more than they need another coffee mug!

And sometimes, mums need the right to vote, as much as they need a cute baby goat!

If you want to give a gift this Mothers’ Day that will last far into the future, try our Make a Mothers’ Day ethical gift catalogue (click on the link).

If you’re planning worship for Mothering Sunday 2011 there are two resources you can download here that will give you ideas for readings, talks, and a form of service.

Feel free to select from or adapt them to suit your local situation.

Mothering Sunday Service Sheet – MAMD 2011 service_sheet
includes talk/meditation notes and children’s resource

Mothering Sunday Church Resources – MAMD 2011 church_resource

UPDATE:

A Key Stage 2 teaching resource split over two lessons which explores family life in rural Uganda. Children learn about how poverty and lack of resources affect families and how their family life differs from, and has the same concerns as, family life in the UK. The children learn about the things which make the lives of mothers, in particular, hard. Extension activities give the children the opportunity to have creative ideas on how they would tackle these problems and involve writing activities to connect their community with those in Uganda. Visual resource and worksheets supplied.

This resource would be a useful focus for Mother’s Day, but will be effective all year round. You can download the materials by clicking on this LINK.

Using the website Global Village Fair (click on the link) or leaflet you can choose from a range of ethical gifts for any occasion. Whether in memory of somebody, as a birthday present or for a wedding gift, your purchase will be helping families around the world in tough circumstances by supporting the work of Mothers’ Union.

Gifts available include:

the gift of training in bee-keeping and mushroom-growing – £7.50

knowledge and training in our Family Life Programme which we run across much of Uganda – £38.00

vocational training in setting up tailoring and sewing businesses, to women and girls in countries where there’s hardly any secondary school education – £100

Local Mothers’ Union group leaders should have received a supply of the brightly coloured leaflets in a recent mailing from the head office of Mothers’ Union (Mary Sumner House), but if you don’t want to use the website, or want further supplies of the leaflet contact them on 020 7222 5533.

Make A Mothers Day, our ethical gift catalogue specifically for Mothering Sunday, will be back just after Christmas with it’s own website and new leaflet for 2010.

St. John’s Underhill Centre,

We will be welcoming
John Wilkinson OBE
Secretary of Hampshire based charity
Education Uganda

John is one of a group of experienced educationalists who are improving primary education in Uganda by supplying schools and training Ugandan teachers in the use of individual blackboards for children to use – what in Uganda they call slates! These are making a big difference, and John will be explaining why. He was in Uganda in July so his news will be very up-to-date!

We welcome anyone interested to come and hear John Wilkinson speak, but if you want further information about this work, please click on the link to Education Uganda

The meeting will also feature an update on Mothers’ Union activities in our region. We will also be selling Mothers’ Union gifts and cards at very advantageous prices – the last opportunity to do so, as from next year local groups and members will be asked to order direct from our head office, Mary Sumner House. Christmas cards and diaries will not be on sale, but pre-ordered ones will be available for collection.

Drinks will be available but you are asked to bring your own packed lunch.

Here are instructions for getting to the Underhill Centre at Hedge End, Southampton (M27 J7 if you are travelling from the North, M27 J8 if you are travelling from the South.)
